Note: PPP rates show how much local currency is needed to buy the same basket of goods as 1 USD would buy in the United States.
For example, if the PPP rate is 0.70, it means that 0.70 units of local currency have the same purchasing power as 1 USD in the US.
Data from OECD (2024) - Household final consumption expenditure PPP rates. Actual purchasing power may vary by region and product category.
How purchasing power parity is calculated
A PPP rate is the number of units of a country's currency needed to buy the same basket of goods and services that one US dollar buys in the United States. Converting an amount between two countries therefore takes two steps — express it in PPP dollars, then apply the destination country's rate:
amount in B = (amount in A ÷ PPP rate of A) × PPP rate of B
Worked through with real figures from the table above: Spain's PPP rate is 0.606 and Japan's is 101. So €1,000 in Spain is €1,000 ÷ 0.606 = $1,650 in PPP dollars, and that in turn is $1,650 × 101 = ¥166,667 of Japanese purchasing power.
The rates here are OECD household final consumption expenditure PPPs for 2024, national currency per US dollar. They are a country-level average across a broad consumption basket, so real purchasing power still varies by city, region and the particular goods you spend on.

- USD to JPY — the gap between Japan's PPP rate and the market rate, and what it means
- USD to GBP — dollar and pound compared at purchasing power rather than the market rate
- USD to CHF — why Swiss salaries look larger at the market rate than at PPP
- USD to CAD — the US–Canada comparison at purchasing power, not the market rate
- USD to NOK — Norwegian prices and pay compared at purchasing power parity

Frequently asked questions
What is Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)? ▾
PPP is an exchange rate that equalizes the purchasing power of different currencies by comparing the cost of the same basket of goods and services in each country. It answers a different question than a market exchange rate: not "how much foreign currency does my money buy today" but "how much can my money actually buy here, compared to somewhere else."
How is a PPP conversion different from a market exchange rate conversion? ▾
Market exchange rates float with trade flows, interest rates, and speculation, and can diverge sharply from what money actually buys locally. PPP rates instead compare local prices directly, so they strip out that noise. A salary that looks modest at the market exchange rate can be worth much more — or less — once converted at PPP, because prices for the same goods vary a lot between countries.
Why do PPP-converted amounts differ so much from a simple currency conversion? ▾
Because goods and services — especially non-tradable ones like housing, haircuts, or restaurant meals — cost different amounts in different countries relative to income. A country with a lower cost of living will show a PPP-converted amount higher than its market-exchange-rate equivalent, since the same money stretches further there.
Where does the PPP data in this calculator come from? ▾
The conversion rates are OECD household final consumption expenditure PPP rates. They're a broad, country-level average, so actual purchasing power can still vary by region, city, and the specific basket of goods you care about — treat the result as a solid approximation, not a precise personal budget.
Can I use PPP to compare salaries between countries? ▾
Yes — that's one of the most common uses. Converting a salary at PPP instead of the market exchange rate gives a much better sense of relative living standards, since it reflects what the salary can actually buy locally rather than what it converts to abroad.
